The importance of stupidity in scientific research

I recently saw an old friend for the first time in many years. We had been Ph.D. students at the same time, both studying science, although in different areas. She later dropped out of graduate school, went to Harvard Law School and is now a senior lawyer for a major environmental organization. At some point, the conversation turned to why she had left graduate school. To my utter astonishment, she said it was because it made her feel stupid. After a couple of years of feeling stupid every day, she was ready to do something else.
I had thought of her as one of the brightest people I knew and her subsequent career supports that view. What she said bothered me. I kept thinking about it; sometime the next day, it hit me. Science makes me feel stupid too. It's just that I've gotten used to it. So used to it, in fact, that I actively seek out new opportunities to feel stupid. I wouldn't know what to do without that feeling. I even think it's supposed to be this way. Let me explain.
For almost all of us, one of the reasons that we liked science in high school and college is that we were good at it. That can't be the only reason – fascination with understanding the physical world and an emotional need to discover new things has to enter into it too. But high-school and college science means taking courses, and doing well in courses means getting the right answers on tests. If you know those answers, you do well and get to feel smart.
A Ph.D., in which you have to do a research project, is a whole different thing. For me, it was a daunting task. How could I possibly frame the questions that would lead to significant discoveries; design and interpret an experiment so that the conclusions were absolutely convincing; foresee difficulties and see ways around them, or, failing that, solve them when they occurred? My Ph.D. project was somewhat interdisciplinary and, for a while, whenever I ran into a problem, I pestered the faculty in my department who were experts in the various disciplines that I needed. I remember the day when Henry Taube (who won the Nobel Prize two years later) told me he didn't know how to solve the problem I was having in his area. I was a third-year graduate student and I figured that Taube knew about 1000 times more than I did (conservative estimate). If he didn't have the answer, nobody did.
That's when it hit me: nobody did. That's why it was a research problem. And being my research problem, it was up to me to solve. Once I faced that fact, I solved the problem in a couple of days. (It wasn't really very hard; I just had to try a few things.) The crucial lesson was that the scope of things I didn't know wasn't merely vast; it was, for all practical purposes, infinite. That realization, instead of being discouraging, was liberating. If our ignorance is infinite, the only possible course of action is to muddle through as best we can.
I'd like to suggest that our Ph.D. programs often do students a disservice in two ways. First, I don't think students are made to understand how hard it is to do research. And how very, very hard it is to do important research. It's a lot harder than taking even very demanding courses. What makes it difficult is that research is immersion in the unknown. We just don't know what we're doing. We can't be sure whether we're asking the right question or doing the right experiment until we get the answer or the result. Admittedly, science is made harder by competition for grants and space in top journals. But apart from all of that, doing significant research is intrinsically hard and changing departmental, institutional or national policies will not succeed in lessening its intrinsic difficulty.
Second, we don't do a good enough job of teaching our students how to be productively stupid – that is, if we don't feel stupid it means we're not really trying. I'm not talking about `relative stupidity', in which the other students in the class actually read the material, think about it and ace the exam, whereas you don't. I'm also not talking about bright people who might be working in areas that don't match their talents. Science involves confronting our `absolute stupidity'. That kind of stupidity is an existential fact, inherent in our efforts to push our way into the unknown. Preliminary and thesis exams have the right idea when the faculty committee pushes until the student starts getting the answers wrong or gives up and says, `I don't know'. The point of the exam isn't to see if the student gets all the answers right. If they do, it's the faculty who failed the exam. The point is to identify the student's weaknesses, partly to see where they need to invest some effort and partly to see whether the student's knowledge fails at a sufficiently high level that they are ready to take on a research project.
Productive stupidity means being ignorant by choice. Focusing on important questions puts us in the awkward position of being ignorant. One of the beautiful things about science is that it allows us to bumble along, getting it wrong time after time, and feel perfectly fine as long as we learn something each time. No doubt, this can be difficult for students who are accustomed to getting the answers right. No doubt, reasonable levels of confidence and emotional resilience help, but I think scientific education might do more to ease what is a very big transition: from learning what other people once discovered to making your own discoveries. The more comfortable we become with being stupid, the deeper we will wade into the unknown and the more likely we are to make big discoveries.

최 근에 몇 년 만에 옛 친구 한 명을 만난 적이 있다. 분야는 달랐지만 우리는 예전에 함께 박사과정에서 과학을 공부했던 사이였다. 그녀는 나중에 대학원을 그만두고 하버드 로스쿨에 진학을 해서 지금은 어느 유명한 환경 기구에서 선임 변호사로 일하고 있다. 대화 도중에 나는 그녀가 왜 대학원을 그만두었는지 알게 되었다. 놀랍게도 그녀는 대학원 공부를 할수록 자신이 바보가 된다는 생각이 들어서 학위를 그만둔 것이라고 했다. 몇 년씩이나 매일마다 자신이 머리가 좋지 못한 사람이라는 생각이 들어서 무언가 다른 일을 해야겠다고 마음 먹었던 것이다.
그녀는 내 지인 중에서도 가장 똑똑한 사람 중 하나로 기억된다. 지금 변호사로 성공한 것을 봐도 틀린 얘기가 아닐 것이다. 그녀의 말 때문에 한참을 고민해야 했다. 며칠을 생각한 끝에 비로소 나도 깨닫게 되었다. 나도 과학을 하면서 바보가 되는 느낌을 받고 있었던 것이다. 단지 내가 그런 상황에 익숙해져서 의식을 못하고 있었을 뿐이다. 너무나 익숙해져서 사실 바보가 된다는 느낌을 새삼스럽게 받을 기회가 없었던 것이다. 나는 바보가 된다는 느낌을 받지 않을 만한 일을 찾아보려고 하지 않았다. 원래 그런 거지라는 식으로까지 생각했다. 나의 의견은 이렇다.
고등학교나 대학교에서 과학을 좋아하는 이유를 대라면 거의 대부분의 사람들은 자신들이 과학 과목을 잘했기 때문이라는 이유를 그 하나로 들 것이다. 그뿐만 아니다. 물질 세계를 이해하면서 느끼는 희열이나 새로운 것을 발견하고 싶은 감성적인 욕구도 그 이유들 중 하나일 것이다. 하지만 고등학교나 대학교에서 가르치는 과학이란 수업을 수강하는 것이고 수업을 잘 들었다는 것은 시험에서 정답을 많이 맞췄다는 의미이다. 정답을 알고 있다면 성취감을 맛보게 되고 자신이 똑똑하다는 느낌도 받게 될 것이다.
연구 프로젝트를 수행해야 하는 박사과정에서는 상황이 완전히 다르다. 나에게 있어 연구는 벽에 부딪치는 일이었다. 과연 나는 어떻게 의미 있는 발견을 유도할 수 있는 질문의 골격을 만들고 실험을 설계하고 해석해서 누가 봐도 설득력이 있는 결론을 이끌어 낼 수 있었을까, 어려움을 미리 예측해서 그 해결방법을 찾아보거나 그렇지 않다면 어려운 일이 발생한 상황에서 그 문제들을 해결해 낼 수 있었을까? 내 박사과정 연구주제는 학제간 공동연구의 성격이 강했기 때문에 한동안 나는 문제가 생길 때마다 내가 필요로 하는 다양한 연구분야의 전문가들이었던 학과 교수들을 찾아가 괴롭히곤 했다. 내 기억으로는 헨리 타우비 (Henry Taube; 2년 후 노벨상을 수상했음) 교수가 나에게 자신의 분야와 관련된 내 질문에 대한 답을 어떻게 찾아야 할지 모르겠다는 말을 한 적이 있다. 당시 박사과정 3년 차 학생이었던 나는 타우비 교수가 나보다 적어도 (대충) 천 배쯤은 많은 것을 알고 있는 사람이라고 생각했었다. 타우비 교수가 답을 모른다면 아무도 모르는 것이었다.
순간 깨닫게 되었다. 아무도 답을 모르는 것이구나. 연구란 게 바로 그런 것이었기 때문이다. 그리고 나의 연구 주제가 된 이상 그 해답은 전적으로 나에게 달린 것이었다. 그 사실을 깨닫게 되자 나는 며칠 만에 그 문제를 해결했다. (그다지 어렵지 않은 일이었다. 그냥 몇 가지 새로운 시도만 했을 뿐이다.) 중요한 교훈은 내가 알지 못하는 것은 그 범위가 그냥 광범위한 수준을 넘어서 실제로는 무한하다는 사실이었다. 그러한 사실을 깨닫게 되자 나는 의기소침해지기보다는 자유로워지는 것을 느꼈다. 우리의 무지가 무한한 것이라면 그냥 최선을 다해서 어떤 문제를 향해 덤벼보면 그뿐인 것이니까.
나는 우리 학과의 박사과정 프로그램이 두 가지 측면에서 학생들을 괴롭혀야 한다고 생각한다. 우선 학생들에게 연구란 것이 얼마나 어려운 일인지 이해시키고 있다는 생각이 들지 않는다. 그리고 중요한 연구를 수행한다는 것이 얼마나, 얼마나 어려운 일인지도 납득시키지 못하고 있는 것 같다. 연구는 빡빡하게 수업을 듣는 것보다 훨씬 더 어려운 일이다. 연구가 어려운 이유는 미지의 세계로 빠져들어가는 것과 같기 때문이다. 우리는 우리가 뭘 하고 있는지조차 모르는 것이다. 답을 얻거나 결과가 나올 때까지는 과연 제대로 된 질문을 던지고나 있는 것인지 아니면 실험을 제대로 하고 있는 것인지조차 확신할 수 없다. 솔직히 과학을 하다 보면 연구비를 따내고 유명 저널에 논문을 싣기 위한 경쟁 때문에 고충이 더 커지기도 한다. 하지만 그런 측면들을 제외한다면 의미 있는 연구 성과를 낸다는 것은 원래부터가 어려운 것이며 학과, 기관 혹은 정부의 정책이 바뀐다고 해서 그러한 근본적인 어려움이 줄어들지는 않는다.
두 번째로 우리는 학생들에게 어떻게 하면 생산적으로 우둔함을 느끼게 할지를 충분히 가르치고 있지 않은 것 같다. 자신의 우둔함을 느끼지 못한다면 그 문제에 대해서 제대로 도전하고 있지 않다는 것이다. 수업시간에 다른 학생들에 비해 수업 자료를 충실하게 읽고 고민하지 않아 시험을 잘 보지 못하는 경우처럼 “상대적 우둔함”을 말하는 것이 아니다. 또, 똑똑한 사람들이 자신의 재능과 상관없는 분야에서 일하는 상황을 말하는 것도 아니다. 과학을 하려면 “절대적인 우둔함”과 직면해야 한다는 것이다. 여기서 “절대적 우둔함”이란 실재하는 현실로서 우리가 스스로를 미지의 세계로 밀어 넣으려는 노력 속에 자리잡고 있는 것이다. 예비 시험이나 학위논문 시험을 볼 때 교수진은 해당 학생이 잘못된 답을 말하기 시작하거나 답변을 포기하고 “잘 모르겠습니다”라는 말을 할 때까지 몰아 부쳐야 한다. 시험의 요지는 그 학생이 모든 답을 다 알고 있는지 확인하기 위한 것이 아니다. 만약 학생이 모든 질문에 답변을 해낸다면 그 시험에서 탈락하는 것은 바로 교수진이다. 핵심은 일단 그 학생의 취약한 부분을 드러내 주어 어떤 부분을 더 노력해야 할지 확인시켜주고 또 한편으로는 그 학생의 지적 수준이 연구 프로젝트를 수행할 수 있을 만한 수준까지 이르렀는지 여부를 확인시켜주는 것이다.
생산적 우둔함이란 스스로의 선택에 의해 무지해는 것을 의미한다. 중요한 문제에 집중하다 보면 바보가 되는 것 같은 불편한 느낌을 받게 된다. 과학이 멋진 이유 중 하나는 몇 번의 시행착오 속에서도 실수를 허용하고 그 과정에서 매번 무언가를 새롭게 터득해 가는 이상 완전한 만족감을 허용해주기 때문이다. 물론 문제의 정답을 맞추는 것에만 익숙해진 학생들에게 이러한 과정은 어려운 일일 수 있다. 또 일정 정도의 자신감이나 톡톡 튀는 생기를 주는 것도 도움이 될 수도 있다. 하지만 내 생각에 과학 교육은 기존의 발견을 학습하는 차원에서 스스로 무언가를 발견해내도록 유도하는 방향으로 더 변해야 한다. 우둔함을 느끼는 것이 더 편안해 질수록 우리는 더 깊은 미지의 세계로 전진해서 더 위대한 진리들을 발견할 수 있을 것이다.
